National Preparedness Month: Make a Plan

8/27/2020 (Permalink)

Family discussing emergency plan Make a Plan Today, Prepare for Tomorrow

"Tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.” - Malcolm X

Why make a plan? Not all the family may be together during a disaster. You may be at work and kids could be at school or with a sitter or relative. A plan needs to be made to ensure everyone will be safe and reunited together.

STEP 1: Put a Plan Together

Have a conversation with your family. Discuss questions like...

  1. How will I receive emergency alerts and warnings?
  2. What is my shelter plan?
  3. What is my evacuation route?
  4. What is my family/household communication plan?
  5. Do I need to update my emergency preparedness kit?
  6. Check with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and update my emergency plans due to Coronavirus.
    • Get cloth face coverings (for everyone over 2 years old), disinfectants, and check my sheltering plan.

STEP 2: Consider the Needs to Your Family

Your plan needs to be unique to your family. Discuss the specific needs that need to be met, such as medical requirements, dietary restrictions, disability assistance, or language assistance.

STEP 3: Have an Emergency Family Plan & Practice It

Create a plan for your family and practice it. Know where the Go-Bags are, where everyone will be meeting, & how everyone will communicate. You can view and download a sample Family Plan here.

Specialized Training

We are prepared to clean and disinfect your business, according to protocols set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We have years of experience in dealing with biological contaminants, and we will go beyond the scope of work that regular janitorial staff perform on a daily basis.

The CDC encourages cleaning of high-touch surfaces such as counters, tabletops, doorknobs, light switches, bathroom fixtures, toilets, phones, keyboards, tablets and tables. Other spaces mentioned in the CDC’s guidance for commercial spaces include:

  • Kitchen/Food Areas
  • Bathrooms
  • Schools/Classrooms
  • Offices
  • Retail Spaces
  • Water Fountains
  • Shelving/Racks
  • Sales Counters
  • Carpets and Rugs
  • Stair Handrails
  • Elevator Cars
  • Playground Equipment
  • Fitness Equipment

Specialized Products

The CDC recommends usage of a labeled hospital-grade disinfectant with claims against similar pathogens to the coronavirus. Multiple products in the SERVPRO product line carry the EPA-approved emerging pathogens claims. While there is currently no product tested against this particular strain of the coronavirus, we are following all guidelines as provided by the CDC and local authorities.

Surviving the Summer Heat

6/21/2019 (Permalink)

The bbq's, beach days, pool parties, & relaxation makes summer a special time. However, summer days can be unbearable due to the heat. No matter how much water you drink, or how much ice cream you eat, cooling down just seems impossible.

The key to surviving summer heat is safety. Follow these tips to endure this summer in Southern California.

  • Stay Hydrated throughout the day.
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol. These stimulate blood flow, causing your body to heat up and use more water rapidly.
  • If working outside, take frequent breaks in the shade.
  • If you begin to get a headache due to the heat, drink more water, and rest in a cool area out of the sun.
  • Check on pets, make sure they have water, and if possible keep them indoors as the ground outside will be hot for them to rest on.
  • Do Not leave children or animals inside a hot car. Even if temperatures are at 75 degrees, it can reach up to 120 in a matter of minutes if in direct sunlight.

As things start to heat up, we wish you and your family a fun & safe time in the summer sun.

2018: The Highlights

12/6/2018 (Permalink)

People started to realize in 2017 that this wasn't the best year they've had. Many of us looked to 2018 with bright eyes and hope as we tried to forget the many memories of 2017. Now, as 2018 comes to a close I think we're all thinking the same thing again...Let's make 2019 a year to remember.

However, let's not forget some of the things that befell us in 2018. We had Hurricane Florence, Fires in California, & Earthquakes in Alaska.

What did we see during these times? We saw disaster, desolation, & destruction. But we overcame because we also saw people come together, to be there for each other, to lend a hand.

We've overcome allot in 2017/2018. Who knows what 2019 will have in store. Yet, no matter what it throws at us, we can all be determined to come together to be there for each other. SERVPRO® of Downey wishes you all the best for this next year to come!

National Preparedness Month; Why it Matters to You.

9/7/2018 (Permalink)

Scar from Lion King said it best,"Be preeeepaaaared!"It's September, National Preparedness Month. A month where all are reminded that we and our families must be ready to take action when a disaster strikes and be prepared.

This is not a month for 'doomsday prepping'. For gathering beans, building bomb shelters, or installing ham radios. Rather it's a time to Learn, to Listen, and to Prepare. The recent Wildfires of California remind us of the importance of disasters and how quick things can escalate.

Consider these questions with your family:

  • Do we have enough supplies to last us before first responders arrive?
  • Do we have skills such as CPR & First Aid?
  • Do we know our insurance policies and coverage for disasters such as a flood, earthquake, or fire?
  • Do we have emergency savings?

Consider your circumstances. What disaster is most likely to happen where I live? This #NationalPreparednessMonth get involved in the conversation. Follow the hashtag above along with #NatlPrep & #PrepareNow.

Disasters don't plan ahead, but you can. Don't risk the safety and welfare of your family. SERVPRO of Downey urges you, be prepared.

National Preparedness Month

9/7/2017 (Permalink)

It's National Preparedness Month this September. It's a time to focus and to prepare for when a disaster may strike. This years theme is:

"Disasters Don't Plan Ahead. You Can."

How true that statement is. We usually have little to no warning when a disaster will strike, but that doesn't mean we're completely hopeless. With proper preparation, whether we're at work, school, or at home, we can be ready to act.

Follow us on Facebook and Twitter to receive updates and tips on how you can better prepare. Spread the word, share it with your family, co-workers, and school mates.

In line with National Preparedness Month we'd like to extend our thanks for all the volunteers who've gone out to help those in Texas affected by Hurricane Harvey. SERVPRO® is working hard out there to get people back in there homes.
